Student Resource Guide

Learning Subject/Verb Agreement Guidelines:

- Carefully listen to the teacher’s lecture on subject/verb agreement.
- Make sure to take notes while the teacher gives the lecture. When taking notes write on every other line, so you can add notes later on.
- Make sure to write down the examples that the teacher goes over. Highlight any of the examples that you find difficult to understand or remember. After the lecture, have the teacher explain any of the examples that you still do not understand.
- Look through the text book and add any details to your notes that may be important. You may also add some of the examples that are found in the book.
- When you go home, review your notes. Make sure you go to a quiet place where you will not be easily distracted. A clean desk is an ideal place to do homework.
- Get on a computer that has access to the internet. When you get on your computer, make sure to get rid of anything that may distract you. For example, do not sign into msn, aol im, facebook, myspace, or any other website that may keep you from studying.
- There are many useful sites online that can help you practice subject/verb agreement. If you feel like you still need more information on subject/verb agreement, you can go to http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/sv_agr.htm. Read through the different subject/verb agreement points. Write down any that you do not understand, so you can ask your teacher the next day.
- At the bottom of the page, there are several quizzes that you can take to practice. Make sure you at least complete one of them. After you answer all of the questions, click on “Submit Application” at the bottom of the page.
- If you need more practice, you can do another quiz at http://www.wisc-online.com/objects/index_tj.asp?objID=WCN3302. When you answer a question, click “Check Answer.” The computer will then tell you if your answer is correct or not. If it is not correct, it will give you an explanation of why the other answer is correct.
