"One Laptop Per Child"

It is great that “One Laptop Per Child” is trying to educate children who normally would not have the opportunity to receive the education. It will be interesting to see how effective this new form of education is. I found it really neat that the laptops are powered by a hand crank. This is great because it provides a means for education even for children who live in areas that do not have electricity!
I think providing a low-powered laptop to students in developing countries has potential to go two ways. I can see it being effective because the children will be extremely excited to have a laptop, and will want to use it as much as possible. Therefore, they may be very motivated to use their laptops, even though it is for educational purposes. Also, children may not even consider it educational. They may simply view it as playing on their new computer. Using laptops may educate children without the children realizing that they are being educated.
Even though this is likely, I can see this form of education not being very effective. I feel like this strategy to educate children puts a whole lot of trust in children being very motivated to educate themselves. I feel that many times it is necessary to have a teacher that will constantly push the children to keep them motivated. In addition, I feel that the excitement of having a new computer will eventually wear off and the children will not be motivated to educate themselves on their laptops. Last, computers are a lot more likely to malfunction or break and are a lot more expensive to replace than books are.
Thus, I feel that it’s great that “One Laptop Per Child” is attempting a new way to educate needy children around the world. I am excited to see how effective it will be. I am simply a little hesitant on how effective it will actually be.
